With the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport in Bhogapuram, the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh is getting a new gateway to the world. Designed by the Meinhardt Group and opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1 August 2026, it masterfully combines sustainability and functionality with regional cultural identity, creating a place that brings people together.
Approximately 57,000 m² of metal ceilings and wall cladding from durlum bring the architectural vision to life. The main source of inspiration for the POLYLAM vertical baffle ceiling is Muggulu, the traditional floor art of Andhra Pradesh and South India, consisting of rhythmic dots, lines, curves and geometric shapes that symbolise harmony, continuity, symmetry and connectedness. The adjacent S4 metal ceiling in the arrivals area, with its bespoke perforation pattern, extends the aesthetic of the POLYLAM ceiling, thereby creating a harmonious whole.
The printed elements of the wall cladding reflect the classic ‘Tree of Life with Peacock’ motif from the local Kalamkari textile art in the Machilipatnam style, which is characterised by intricate block printing using natural dyes.
The architecture skillfully blends traditional elements with modern design. The result is an airport that is firmly rooted in the rich local culture and is set to become the centre of a growing economic ecosystem in northern Andhra Pradesh.
