With the new Gadigal Metro Station – formerly Pitt Street Station – Sydney Metro expands the city’s transport network right in the heart of the central business district (CBD). The 250-metre-long underground station beneath the Pitt, Park and Bathurst streets links two independent entrances to the retail core and the growing commercial and mixed-use districts of the southern CBD. The name honours the Gadigal people, the original custodians of the land, and highlights Pitt Street’s role as a key urban transport hub.
From the entrance to the platform, passengers follow a clear, intuitive route through a calm, high-quality environment. The ceilings flow seamlessly – like the movement of a cobra – from the passageways to the platforms, combining 5,000 m² of bespoke curved bronze bulkheads with white horizontal aluminium tube ceiling and wall linings. The complex curved ceiling and wall elements demanded highest precision in both manufacturing and installation. Particularly in the transition zones where platforms meet passageways, each panel had to fit with millimetre accuracy to realise the architect’s vision. Close and ongoing collaboration between the durlum and Foxville design teams produced a custom solution that combines functionality, aesthetics, and durability.
Gadigal Metro Station sets a new benchmark for modern, urban mobility in Sydney. The precisely executed, bespoke ceiling systems from durlum significantly contribute to the station’s elegant and tranquil atmosphere, making it a striking architectural highlight in the public realm.
