The comprehensive modernisation of Magdeburg Central Station has created a contemporary transport hub that combines functionality, a pleasant environment and architectural clarity. The redesigned interior spaces are characterised by bright, high-quality materials and perfectly integrated lighting. In 2025, the station was awarded ‘Station of the Year’ by the Pro-Rail Alliance – in particular for its high quality of stay, accessibility and the successful redesign of the entire station area.

For this project, durlum supplied ceiling, lighting and wall cladding solutions. The focal point is an S7 metal ceiling, a bespoke solution featuring high-gloss, hydroformed aluminium ceiling panels. The smooth surfaces create a particularly bright and open feel to the space thanks to their reflective properties.

The ceiling system is complemented by OMEGA PROTECT light channels with an IK10 impact resistance rating. These vandal-proof luminaires ensure long-lasting and reliable lighting in the high-traffic station area. With their clearly defined lines, the light channels blend seamlessly into the architecture and aid wayfinding within the public areas.

The wall design was also executed as a bespoke solution. The WS4 wall cladding, made of high-gloss aluminium, echoes the materiality of the ceiling, creating a harmonious overall look and emphasising the station’s architectural style.

The combination of reflective metal surfaces and a robust lighting system has created a station environment that meets the demands of modern mobility as well as the standards of architectural excellence.
