Opened in 1971, Sendlinger Tor underground station is one of Munich’s most important transport hubs. As part of a comprehensive refurbishment and modernization carried out while operations continued, the underground station and the adjacent traffic and public areas were functionally, technically, and aesthetically reorganized. The aim was to untangle complex traffic flows, ensure barrier-free access, and sustainably improve the quality of stay.
Lighting plays an integral role in the overall architectural and lighting design concept. It supports orientation in this highly frequented space, enhances safety, and makes a significant contribution to the clear and calm design of the newly created areas.
Across all three levels of the station, exclusively project-specific functional luminaires were used, with installation also coordinated by durlum. All luminaires are ENEC-certified and designed for use in public transport environments. Accordingly, they feature a high protection rating of IP65 and, depending on the area of application, increased impact resistance of up to IK08.
Thanks to the lighting concept, the clear choice of colors, and the spatial design, Sendlinger Tor has emerged after more than seven and a half years of construction as a place that is convincing in every respect.
